  • MILL POND Series 1
Vernonia, Oregon

These images are from a picture taken at the site of what had been the largest all-electric lumber mill in the world, built by the Oregon-American Lumber Company in the 1920's. With the depletion of the vast supplies of lumber in the region, the mill was no longer needed. In 1957 it was sold to Hollywood to be burnt down for scenes in the movie 'Ring of Fire.'

The concrete foundation of the building still stands alongside the Mill Pond. It is now roofless. Trees, grass, and shrubs grow inside the structure and local kids paint colorful graffiti on its inner walls. It has the feel of a great cathedral open to the sky.
